Today we are chatting about money. Sometimes a touchy subject with some but it is a subject I think I am good about. I feel like my husband and I are verrrrrry similar and one main thing is how we spend and save money. I always give my hubby a hard time by calling him a tightwad but in actuality I am too.
Here are some of the ways we save:
We don’t use credit cards as money that we don’t have.
We definitely use our Southwest credit card (because POINTS!) but we pay the entire thing off each month. We are VERY aware of our credit and don’t ever want to bring it down with a credit card. The thought of it gives me anxiety! If you don’t pay the full amount off in a month, the amount of interest you pay is ridiculous! That is so much extra money (we are talking hundreds of dollars, and for some, thousands) that adds up over time that could have bought you something really nice. Why just hand it over to the bank? NO. Pay it off.
We buy food in bulk and deep freeze it.
About once every two months or so, we go to our Sam’s club and buy tons and tons of meat and frozen items. That night we get our zip lock bags out and break everything apart and put it in our freezer. It lasts a really long time and gives us a lot of options.
We save money before “seeing it”
My husband has chunks of his checks go into savings before he gets them. Now that I am self-employed, we don’t know how next year’s taxes will look. I am starting to put 30% away from each one of my paychecks and it goes straight to savings. That way if I have to pay taxes for being self employed then it’s not a biggie. That savings account will pay it off. If I don’t have to pay then we will have a nice little chunk of change that we agreed we could splurge on something with. If you put money away before you see it, it isn’t as depressing and you learn to live off of what you do see.
I make a lot of my own cleaning supplies.
This is a recent change for me that started out being for health reasons but when I broke down the cost….WOW! I had everything I needed to make my own cleaning solutions and they work really well. The added bonus is that I can make them smell however I want with my essential oils.
My biggest saver is making my own LAUNDRY DETERGENT. My friend had told me about this as a way she saves when I was complaining about how expensive it is. She said she makes a YEAR’S worth of soap for $25. Uhmmmm WHAT?! I was spending about $17 every two months. So I decided to give it a try. YOU GUYS….. it works better than ANY brand I have EVER used and smells so fresh and nice. I am SHOCKED and will never go back.
We don’t go out much
Another way Kyle and I are similar is we are homebodies. We just like being home! When we do “go out” it is usually picking up something quick to eat and that’s about it. There is a rare occasion that a good movie comes out and we will have my parents watch Lacey for us. Other than that, we like to stay in!
HOW WE SPLURGE:
NFL Sunday Ticket
My husband lives for football. He grew up playing and played all through college and now watches every. single. game. It is one of those things that he loves so much that we can’t get rid of it!
We try to go on one big vacation a year. When we went on our honeymoon to the Bahamas we realized we needed to see more. It is my husband’s goal to visit all 50 states which he is halfway there! I on the other hand just want to see new places. So far we have been to NYC, DC, Seattle, Alaska, New Jersey, and this year we are adding Hawaii!
I have realized that I love makeup! So that is the thing I tend to splurge on!
Other than that, we aren’t really big spenders! I am loving getting saving tips from everyone!!! I am off to read more now, happy Tuesday everyone 🙂
